Mid-Thoracic spinal dysfunction and south surrey back pain cured by chiropractor in white Rock
Health Well, that’s a mouthful! But really it’s not that complicated, its abnormal alignment or motion in the mid back region and is a major cause of pain in the spinal system. As chiropractors we treat this problem in our White Rock Office. This “syndrome” involves an increased curvature in the mid back usually as the result of prolonged sitting in a constrained posture. Does that sound familiar to anyone’s situation today? Sitting at a desk and working at a computer station will definitely fit the bill here. Not only is the mid-back affected so is the lumbo pelvic (lower back) and the cranio cervical (head/neck) postural alignment altered. So in reality you are causing your lower back and upper neck to misalign as well. According to a researcher named Briigger, this syndrome is referred to as the “Sternosymphysical Syndrome.” Now, I’m not even going to try and explain that one, we will refer to it as “Mid-Thoracic Spinal Dysfunction”. The very nature of this abnormal posture can cause facial pain, neck and shoulder
pain, breathing problems, lumbar disc syndromes and nerve impingement problems. Chiropractors are well equipped to assess this problem. They use postural analysis and joint-function analysis. The classic sign of “thoracolumbar hypertonus” is always there. This means that the muscle at the junction of the mid back and lower back are almost in spasm. Treatment is chiropractic adjusting, exercise and postural advice. Advice on how to sit at the workstation, at home or in the automobile is very important to the final outcome. Also “flexion overload” or too much bending will also upset these same muscles. Proper bending and lifting must also be adhered to. Exercises that are helpful are 1)“Backstretch on the Ball” and 2)“Kolar’s Wall Slide with Arm Elevation”: 1) The backstretch on the ball is a very comfortable and relaxing manoeuvre. It will stretch the back and aid in improved respiration. It may cause dizziness at
first. Also, the individual will need guidance and support to make sure they can balance on the ball. 2) Kolar’s exercise combines arm elevation, squatting and breathing. Again it stretches the back and promotes breathing. The individual sits on the edge of the chair with the front of their foot/shoe touching a wall. They lean towards the wall with both arms elevated and the back of their hands against their forehead. They allow their mid back to migrate towards the wall holding for 5–10 seconds. These exercises combined with postural advice and chiropractic adjusting will go a long way in managing this disorder. Chiropractors are well trained in postural analysis.
